Slips, Trips and Falls in the workplace

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported that there were 1117 workers injured by a slip, trip or fall at work in 2009 in the East Midlands.  HSE figures show that more workplace deaths are caused as a result of falls from height than any other cause and slips, trips and falls at work cost an estimated £800 million each year.

Typical hazards include:-

  • Damaged floors – report any damaged floors and put up warning signs whilst repairs are carried out;
  • Trip hazards – keep workplaces tidy, tuck away trailing wires and store items safely instead of leaving boxes or trolleys lying around;
  • Cleaning – spills should be cleaned up as soon as practicable and the correct cleaning products used so flooring doesn’t become slippery;
  • Water leaks – ensure taps can be turned off properly, fix any leaks or use drip trays so that water doesn’t spill over the floor;
  • Working at height – use the correct access equipment and any personal protective equipment issued by employers;
  • Climbing on furniture – don’t be tempted to climb on a chair to reach a shelf, particularly if the chair has wheels, use a step ladder or kick step instead, even if it takes longer;
  • Maintain large equipment properly to reduce the need to make emergency repairs, particularly where there is a potential risk of falling into machinery;
  • Steps and ramps – handrails should be provided and where practical non slip flooring should be used;
  • Carrying equipment or deliveries – ensure walkways are clear from trip hazards and plan work to minimise carrying where possible, e.g. using trolleys and ensuring employees have received manual handling training.
